The Best Story You’ll Ever Tell Yourself to Keep You Motivated



Imagine saying this to yourself when you get up tomorrow morning.

(Your name), as a life-long customer of you, I’ve seen many things happening with this establishment. When you started in the early days and opened your doors for the first time, I wasn’t sure whether or not things would turn out for the best. I mean, a lot of help was needed, almost 24 hours a day and it took a long time before some of the tasks were manageable by you. But, and I have to admit, you’re a quick learner and you adapt to new situations rapidly.

Years flew by and I’ve seen the trends come and go, but you’ve managed to maintain stability in your growth year in and year out, and that is truly remarkable. There aren’t many companies that can say that in these challenging times we’re living in currently.

I know that new times ask for new approaches – changes in management and sometimes that means cutting down on the storage facility and trimming down on the things that are of only excess baggage to keep the customers happy – because the customer still is King.

I know it’s not easy to say goodbye to those who’ve been there for years and who’ve supported you in times of need; we all know.

Still, are they serving you still, or are they costing you more than you’d like to afford?

I know you are the head, the Big Chief in Charge of Maintenance, Change and Progress, and that it’s your decision. And up till now, you’ve done a heck of a job to keep this establishment going strong.

Like I said, times are changing, just like the Bob Dylan song, and that means that we have to keep changing, too, to keep up and keep ahead. If there’s anything that I can tell you from this side of the mirror, it’s this: keep that what is making you win and tweak to improve it into excellence – and lose that what’s losing anymore or what’s already lost.

You’ve come this far. Keep going. You’re not ‘there’ yet. Keep your vision, hold your focus, fulfill your mission. You’re a winner. I know you can do it, and trust me, when I’m saying something like this, believe you-me that I mean what I’m saying. You’re holding the gold.

You’re not the Apple; you’re the Apple tree. You’re not the Facebook; you’re the embodiment of life’s library. You’re not even the Google; you’re the Googolplex. There’s infinity to the infinitieth potential in you that if you truly decide to go for it all, there’s not a single atom in my system that will doubt that. You can do it. And you know what? I’ll remain you’re loyal, trusting and faithful customer if you will keep delivering me what I need and want.

Now go out and get it.”

I bet that that’ would have a much different result than when you wake up, get dressed, see yourself in the mirror and say ‘Okay, it’s Wednesday – week’s almost over.”

Soft skills are needed everywhere. No matter what you do, how many degrees you have or the years of experience you have – if you don’t have the right set of tools to bring to the working table, it will be incredibly hard to keep moving forward and get the results you aim for.

Soft skills are personal attributes that enable you to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people, and these skills are often times even more important than the hard skills, such as negotiation and sales skills.

if you take a good look around, you’ll see that the world we live and work in, evolves more around people, and less about the products. Sure, products are important, but without people feeling good about them, there wouldn’t be any products to sell. Even the rapid development of new technologies and emerging markets, such as virtual reality, self-driving cars and apps like Uber and AirBnB require not only people to use it, but moreover, people to make it. In this day and age, we can train people how to do things. This is called transactional education. You put in A, you get out B. But for most of us, that just doesn’t cut it anymore. We need something that doesn’t keep us on the same level of operation and success, we need to move forward, and climb the ladder of both achievement and fulfillment.

This type of thinking is called transformational education or knowledge. Why Personal Development Matters In Business


Have you ever wondered why people go to their work? In the first place, you’d think it is because they need the paycheck to make a living. Though this is true, most people aren’t propelled by money to do the work they do. It’s something you can’t buy with money.

Research show that it doesn’t matter as such how much you pay a person to do their job. There is a threshold where the quality of the work will not increase, no matter how much more you pay them. From this, you could conclude that money is not the #1 driving force behind someone’s work. After all, if they aren’t intrigued by a bigger paycheck to do more work, why would you pay them more?

The key to having satisfied employees who not only do their work in the best way they can, but keep them motivated to do their best, is personal development – the ability to grow and develop oneself within the organization and the possibilities is holds for them.

Perception is projection. Or is it?


We all do it: you meet someone, and in the first few seconds you know if you like the person or not. But based on what do we make this decision?

The answer is projection. Based on our experiences we project what we know of other people how we want to feel about the person standing in front of us today.

We can’t help it. It’s the way our brain is wired – even to the core of our most inner and animalistic part of our brain: the amygdala (also known as the reptile brain).

But before we exclude ourselves as someone that is labeled as ‘helpless’ in the context of perception and projection, ask yourself what you CAN do to be open for meetings with new people.

Yes, what we perceive is based upon past experiences. But now that you know this, you can make a conscious decision to put aside the prejudice when acquainting with someone you’ve never met before, and start being curious. Curiosity didn’t kill the cat – it gave it more opportunities to explore the world.

If you find yourself projecting or judging someone you don’t know yet – or even someone you do know, and triggers you in their behavior or speech – make a conscious decision (after contacting your coach to work on that trigger) to be as curious as possible to find out more about that person.

Not only will you find that your judgement or projection is inaccurate, you also might find a person that is interesting and worth making a friend, colleague or business partner.

Thirdly, by being curious in an authentic way, the other person will feel you are willing to invest your time in them, and that results in them opening up even more, enabling your contact to be even higher in terms of quality and pleasure.

Whether you decide to feel great or bad about something or someone – you are right. How you perceive is how you project. Both towards yourself as well as to others. Ask yourself: Is this what I’m feeling about (…) really true?

So, perception is projection. Yes – but you always have a choice to decide whether you want to stick to your prejudice or to remain open for the person behind your projection. In the end, that becomes your new perception.

Stop Feeling Indifferent

Feeling indifferent?

Rememmber: you are unique, with all your qualities and capabilities. Yes, there may be hundreds or even thousands of beautiful sunflowers around the world, just like you – meant to shine and to show their beauty to the rest of the world. But you, in all your glory, all your tituals, all your knowledge, wisdom and richness have chosen to grow your way; to choose your path and become the person you are today.

And that makes you unique.

Take a look at a sunflower. Examine it from up close, and you’ll see that it is also unique in the way it’s trunk is growing, the direction its leaves are spreading and to which extent it rises.

We’re all sunflowers. But that doesn’t define you for who you are, nor is it a reason to compare yourself or to keep small.

Why the Road to Passion Is Painful Yet Beautiful

The day before my flight to South-Africa, I hold a seminar in which I talk about how to find your passion and how to reach the goals you’ve set for yourself. Many of the participants are wondering if they’re on the right track with their life, what their current lifestyle can do more for them, and if they’ll ever be able to find their passion at all.

My flight, the following day, runs smoothly, and I’m excited and relaxed at the same time. Flying to unknown territory feels as part of my comfortzone, thanks to my adventure in Orlando, Florida, a couple of months earlier. I can allow myself to feel at ease while I’m bridging the eleven hour gap from Amsterdam to Johannesburg. Upon arrival, the unknown and therefore the positive tension surfaces.

I spend the first couple of days with two co-travelers: we discover the historical and cultural parts of the country, by visiting the Apartheids museum, Nelson Mandela’s house (which has been transformed into a museum), and the highest building of the continent; the Top of Africa. Even a safari, in which we’re seeking to find elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos and many more exotic animals is part of our African adventure. Between my companions and me, a warm connection is growing and I feel empowered by these wonderful experiences.

The main reason why I’m here, is a big conference, where entrepreneurs can network on an international level,  acquire new businesses and contacts, and where national as well as international speakers, among which Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, will share their knowledge, experience and insights on doing business.

On the third and final day, just after I fled the congress with the most beautiful, caring and amazing lady ever to get some air and grab a bite to recharge my  sleep deprived physical and mental battery, I quietly tip-toe my way back to the first row of the packed (well over a thousand people) conference hall to take my seat.

My business-partner and good friend immediately grabs me by the wrist and whispers in my ear: “You have to get on stage and pitch your company!” The relaxed feeling of the wonderful lunch with the beautiful lady changes in a blink of an eye to sudden stress and panic.

Due to this paralyzing feeling, along with the sudden necessity to make a choice whether or not to go on stage, I almost loose control; immediately I switch to my rational side to regain control over the situation. I can feel my heart pounding in my throat as I slowly make my way to the stage.

P1140802Spotlights shine their bright light on me, and at the same time I bring the microphone to my mouth to speak, I can’t remember a word I want to say; I have a blackout. Seconds pass, and they feel like an eternity. Finally, I force myself to say something; anything!

Logic takes over and while the tension is racing through my veins, I’m happy I remember a few words I want to say, and I start to tell some boring story about what it is my company does. Even though the stress slowly pours out of my system, it takes a while before I can truly speak from the heart and find the balance between logic and passion.

Still, after descendingI the stage, I feel as if I’ve failed; no introduction, didn’t mention my name and even my company name I forgot to state. I didn’t say what I wanted to say. I feel guilty forwards myself, mostly because I know I could have done better. Despite positive feedback form others afterward on my authenticity; I put the emphasis on the few who criticize me for my lack of structure in my pitch. I literally feel the pain within me, and there’s nothing I can do about it but to blame myself.

It’s ironic; weeks before my flight to Orlando, Florida, I practiced for at least ten minutes a day a short speech, in case I’d get the stage for a few minutes. Now, about six months later, I finally get that stage, and I’m completely unprepared for this opportunity.

It’s only on the day I  fly back home to the Netherlands, and take a closer look at my experiences in South-Africa, that I feel, whilst flipping through the photo’s, I’ve taken a step forward in the direction of my passion.

The realization that, during those few days, I was doing more that I have been doing so far, enable me to get back in touch with that feeling of power and belief in myself; the reason why I do what I do. The drive that will get me where I want to be. It’s both my dream and vision to inspire, motivate and help others grow on an international level .

Despite being active in the area of personal development for years, and overcoming many obstacles to be at the level of success I am now, I realize that there still is anentier path before me to pursue.

Moments in which stress grabs you by the throat, because, during the discovery of that unfamiliar path, you feel you’re unprepared in what to expect more. It feels like you’re failing, while in fact it’s a beautiful experience and solely a temporary outcome. It provides the insights that so-called mistakes are nothing more than knowledge and information, and that you have the freedom to alter your course and keep going in the direction you’re aiming at.

Whether we know what our passion is or we’re still at the starting point of discovering it – its’ the steps we take into the unknown, it’s the signals we receive that show us the way and from which we can tap into our power. This feeling comes from the heart, and it’s the key we have to turn, to open up our heart and truly feel what we want in our life, to find that passion.

It’s almost a guarantee: when you’re looking for your passion, your path, you’ll encounter obstacles along the way to your potential and your purpose. But, it’s that beautiful feeling of fulfillment to live the life we envision.

Do You Have a Problem?

We all have them – problems, challenges, issues, or whatever you’d want to call them. In fact, we need them to grow and discover more of our own potential. Without problems, there would only be comfort zones.

So what is a problem? Most people would argue problems are obstacles, annoying barricades that seem to rise up at times we least like them to have around.

Problem, Challenge, Issue
I used to soften the word, by calling it a challenge or an issue. ‘No, it’s not a problem – it’s a challenge’. Sometimes this would work, but often times, my mind would just start to argue with me, telling me I’d only fool myself by changing the word, but keeping the meaning.

And here in lies the problem – or challenge of you will 🙂

What is the definition of a problem?

Though I got the best answer from one of my teachers early on at the beginning of my career, I kept on searching for a definition of the word ‘problem’.

It’s mostly the association we have with the word ‘problem’. If you think of a problem, then what do you think of? And how does it make you feel?

I think I could guess. When you thought of a problem, if only for a second, you thought of a situation in which you felt uncomfortable – from slight stress to complete overload. The problem you thought of wasn’t that small, in fact, it seemed bigger now, than before I asked you to think of a problem.

All right, please note that at this time, it would be my advice to do something to create a distance from you and your problem. Shake it off, or even stand up and do some jumping jacks. When you’re done, please come back, I’ll help you resize and redefine your meaning and definition of a problem.

Ok, you’re back? I presume you did shake it off or do something else to put that problem you were thinking of into the far background.

As you could see, it’s the association of the word that gives you the meaning of it, which either supports you or limits you. And if it’s not supporting you, than I’d recommend changing it.

Keeping problems
Though some people might say to drop the word problem as a whole from your dictionary, I would disagree. The word exists, and it’s already fundamentally rooted into your cognitive mind. Trying to erase it would be similar to unlearn the skill of walking. It’s virtually impossible.

Nothing has a meaning…
Instead, change your association of the word, so the meaning of it will change. And if the meaning changes, everything changes. Another great teacher of mine once said ‘Nothing has a meaning, except the meaning you give it’. And boy, was he right.

Changing the association
So how to change your association of the word problem? Well, think of something that you once really wanted to have, but at the time, you didn’t. It doesn’t really matter what exactly you’re thinking of, only that the result is this: you got what you wanted.

Thought about it? Great, let’s do another one. Think of something you wanted to have when you were a bit older. What was it? What kind of feeling did it give you to want it, and evenmore important – what kind of feeling did it give you when you got it?

And how about your teen years? Can you think of something that you wanted then? Of course you can. Just imagine how it was to be a teen, and what kind of things was important to you. You recognize the feeling of missing something – and later on getting it? Great, imagine it to the detail, really step into the feeling of wanting it, and then getting or accomplishing it.

Now do this one more time. Go back just a little bit. To last week, or last month. There was a situation in which you didn’t have the result yet of something you really wanted. A small thing made big, or even a big thing made bigger. You got it? Recognize the feeling when you didn’t have it, and then immediately go to the feeling of when you did get it. A relief, right? Yeah.

What you just did, is making a start of reconditioning your mind to redefine the association to the meaning of the word ‘problem’.

You see – a problem is nothing more that the difference between the situation you’re in right now, and the situation you want to be in. That’s all.

So whenever you find yourself in a situation that you feel you’re missing something that you’d like to have or be in, just remember that you have a problem, and that there will always be a solution to get to the situation you want to be in.

We live in a fast-paced, microwave, drive-thru, Buy-It-Now society.

It’s a society that has forgotten to be truly grateful for the things around it. We only tend to be grateful for things when we no longer have them.

Think of the sense of relief you gain when you just get over an illness, and are so thankful that your turbulent tummy has now settled. Consider how appreciative you are when those tests come back clear. Or when the speeding camera doesn’t flash. Or when you finally find your lost child in the supermarket.

These are the moments in life when we realize how blessed we truly are.

Yet how many of us truly appreciate that on a day-to-day basis?

My guess is very few of us. We only become grateful of things when we think we don’t have them.

But here’s the thing: by counting our blessings every day, in a very literal way, we become happier people. Research across the globe in countless studies has proven this over and over again.

So, when was the last time YOU were truly grateful?

Think of all the wonderful things you have to be grateful for right now. It could be your family. Or your health. Maybe your home. Your friends. Your brain. Your heart. Your spirit. Even your DVD collection.

We’ve all got amazing things in our own lives that make us smile with joy. Things that bring a secret, loving tear to our eyes.

And if we can only learn to count these blessings every day, we’ll discover a true happiness and greater appreciation of the beautiful world we surround ourselves with.

So, if you can, make that part of your daily ritual. Count your blessings, briefly in the morning, and briefly at night. Then smile at the world for sending such great things your way.

Be grateful – and you will be happy.
